Pelvic Injuries
Injuries of the pelvis include those that involve the sacroiliac joints, the pubic symphysis, and the surrounding and overlying soft tissue structures.
Pelvic injuries are common in patients who have preexisting lumbar spine and/or hip joint dysfunction and in those who are pregnant due to the added pressure placed on the pelvis to maintain optimal lumbopelvic function.
Characteristic symptoms of pelvic injuries include;
- Unilateral low back pain with ipsilateral hip pain
- Low back pain with associated referral into the posterior leg (not traveling past the knee)
- Dull achy pain over the pubic symphysis
Common neuromusculoskeletal pelvic injuries include:
- Anterior and/or posterior sacroiliac joint strains
- Osteitis pubis
- Lumbar and sacral plexus irritation
- Lumbosacral joint strain
- Overlying muscle tissue strains (adductor magnus, adductor brevis, adductor longus, gracilis)
Essentially the treatment approach with any neuromusculoskeletal pelvic injury is to identify the etiology of dysfunction and restore ideal and/or optimal movement patterns.
